Telomeres: Key to Youthful Aging

TelomeresCurrently, there is a lot of talk about aging. Especially with about 8,000 people per day turning 65. Everyone is always looking for that magic potion or pill, their own fountain of youth. You may not have to look any further than the ends of your DNA. That is where you’ll find your telomeres. Slowing down telomere shortening is the key to healthy aging.

What are telomeres?

At birth, we all have a certain number of cells. As we grow, those cells divide and the DNA replicates. With each replication, not all of the information is copied to the very end. Those continually shortening bases at the end of your DNA are called telomeres. Everyone starts out with about 10,000 bases. At 5,000, people begin to die of old age. In between those two numbers, you’ll start to see the signs of aging like loss of muscle tone, diminishing eyesight, memory issues, and more.

For a long time, scientists believed that nothing could be done about this aging process. However, in recent years it was determined that several actions will help slow down telomere shortening, including:

  • Cleansing toxins from the body
  • Controlling weight and holding onto lean muscle
  • Coping with mental and physical stress
  • Replenishing the body with the right nutrition and supplements
  • Combating oxidative stress, and providing telomere support

According to biochemist, nutritionist, and Olympic trainer, Dr. Michael Colgan, the body requires 60 essential nutrients every single day. If you fall short, your health and mind will decline into premature aging.

In an effort to combat this, anti-aging specialist, Dr. William Andrews has been conducting cutting edge research on telomeres for several decades. This type of research is so significant that it won the Nobel Prize in 2009. Dr. Andrews holds over 60 related patents, and partnered with master formulator, John Anderson, to create an amazing product to impact the aging process. Used in conjunction with an all natural, complete nutritional system, Product B provides unparalleled antioxidant and telomere support.

With a full spectrum of bioactive antioxidants, Product B helps protect the body from harmful free radicals that can accelerate aging, and contribute to poor health. This allows you to maintain harmonious cell functioning, and target oxidative stress. Other programs may make many claims, but you can’t get these results anywhere else. Contact us today at Nutrivinity to regain and maintain youthful aging, and dramatically improve your quality of life. You only have one body. Doesn’t it deserve the very best? Give it what it really needs with our top quality nutrition, and Product B.

Obesogens: The Skinny on Fat Chemicals

“I work out. I eat right. Yet, I still can’t get rid of this belly, these thighs,” etc… Or, “I’ve lost the weight in the past only to gain it back a few months later.” Sound familiar? Working in nutrition, I hear this all the time. Let me assure you, it’s not about how much you’re eating as what’s in your food, and your environment. Let’s talk about obesogens. These are chemicals with hormone-like activity that can disrupt your endocrine system leading to obesity and diabetes. If exposure to these chemicals occurs during development, it may take years for the adverse reactions to show, making this a serious issue for adults, children, and pregnant women.

Obesogens a.k.a. Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals

team-lean-green-obosegensAccording to the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the number of endocrine disrupting chemicals, or obesogens, is growing, as is our obesity rate. Over 2/3 of adults are considered overweight or obese, as are nearly 20% of children in the US. Retha Newbold of the NIEHS states, “Obesity is a complex disease, affecting virtually all ages, races, sexes, and socioeconomic groups, with serious social and psychological repercussions. Further, obesity and overweight are major contributors to the global burden of chronic diseases and are associated with Type 2 diabetes, hyper-insulinemia, insulin resistance, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, gout, liver disease, asthma and pulmonary problems, gall bladder disease, kidney disease, reproductive problems, osteoarthritis, and some forms of cancer.”

Obesogenic.org lists the following nine major obesogens:

  1. Nicotine – Babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy have been shown to be at higher risk for obesity later in life.
  2. Bisphenol A (BPA) –While it has been banned in many products, BPA can still be found in the lining of bottles and cans, cashier receipts, and synthetic paper bags. Studies show that it makes fat cells larger, disrupts estrogen and testosterone levels, and can cause behavioral issues in children exposed in utero. Avoid canned goods, use glass bottles and containers, do not handle your receipts, if possible, and consider reusable shopping bags.
  3. Organotins – Found in plastics, PVC, and marine paint, there is a risk for diabetes, abnormal fetal development (proven in animals), and shutting down the immune system. It is a good idea to use alternatives whenever possible.
  4. Pesticides – Two words: go organic.
  5. Phthalates – Commonly found in personal care products like shampoos, lotions, and perfumes, these increase the risk of obesity, as well as the possibility of stunted growth in children. It is extremely important to read labels, not just on food, but on all of your personal care items, as well.
  6. Atrazine – An herbicide that has been found to contaminate 94% of water tested in the US, which can slow the metabolism and thyroid. Always use filtered water.
  7. Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) – Contained in the coating of non-stick pans, this is easily avoided by using healthier stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic cookware.
  8. High fructose corn syrup – A major obesogen, it reduces the amount of leptin, which tells the body it is full, and can lead to insulin resistance. Use organic, natural sweeteners, like stevia, instead.
  9. Soy – Can lead to malnutrition by blocking the proper absorption of certain vitamins and minerals, cancer, and diabetes. Giving a baby soy formula is the estrogenic equivalent of four birth control pills per day. Avoid ALL products containing soy, except very small amounts of organic fermented soy, like in tempeh or miso.

As you can clearly see, it’s not enough to simply change your caloric intake and the amount of exercise you get. It is critical that you also limit the toxins and obesogens in your environment as much as possible, and cleanse your body of the ones you’ve already been exposed to or consumed. For this reason, I highly recommend nutritional cleansing, which removes toxins on a cellular level, while replenishing the body with more than 100 different nutrients. Not all cleanses are the same, as you may well know. Contact us at Nutrivinity for more information on how to be fit, healthy, and obesogen-free.
